How to Teach Sudoku to Kids
- Start with one rule. Show a row with one number missing and ask which number is left.
- Add columns and boxes. Explain that the same check works up and down and inside each thick-lined box.
- Find the fullest line. The row, column or box with the most numbers is the easiest place to start.
- Check, don't guess. Ask how they know a number fits. There is always a reason.
- Move up slowly. After 4×4 comes 6×6, then the easy 9×9 sheet.
Older beginners can read the Naked Singles and Scanning guides, which explain the same ideas for the full-size grid.
Kids Sudoku Questions
What age is Sudoku for kids suitable for?
Many children can start 4×4 puzzles at around 5 or 6, once they recognise the numbers 1 to 4. 6×6 puzzles suit children who are comfortable with those, often from about 7. Every child is different, so go by interest rather than age.
What are the rules of 4×4 Sudoku?
Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 2×2 box contains the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 once each. In 6×6 Sudoku, each row, column and 2×3 box contains 1 to 6.
Does every puzzle have one answer?
Yes. Every puzzle on this page was checked by a program to have exactly one solution, and the answers are on the last page.
What comes after 6×6?
Try the easy 9×9 Sudoku sheet. It uses the same rules on a bigger grid, with plenty of numbers already filled in.
